WILLIAM K. MEHEULA
|
William Meheula graduated from the
University of Pennsylvania Wharton School in 1975 and from
Suffolk University Law School in 1978. Before joining
Winer Meheula & Devens LLP in 1994, Mr. Meheula was a
partner at Carlsmith, Wichman, Case, Mukai & Ichiki (1984
to 1989) and a partner at McCorriston Miho Miller Mukai
(1989-94). He has an "AV" rating from
Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Meheula's practice concentrates on civil litigation
involving legal malpractice, medical malpractice, trust &
estates, real estate, insurance and other types of complex
commercial litigation for either side. On the
plaintiff's side, Mr. Meheula has obtained million dollar
judgments or settlements in over ten cases including two cases
that settled for over $5 million.
Outside of his regular practice, Mr. Meheula has lectured
many times on commercial litigation, trial practice and legal
malpractice. The Hawaii Supreme Court and the U.S. District
Court of Hawaii appointed Mr. Meheula as chairman of the
Committee on Adoption of the ABA Model Rules of Professional
Conduct. In 1992-94, he was lead counsel in representing
beneficiaries of the Hawaiian Home Lands Trust in litigation
against the State of Hawaii for breaches of fiduciary duty
that resulted in a $600 million settlement. In 1994, Mr.
Meheula received the Hawaii State Bar Association's
"Justice Award" for his pro bono work in that case
and other service to the Hawaiian community. Since 1996,
Mr. Meheula has represented native Hawaiians in litigation
that enjoined the State of Hawaii from selling ceded lands,
which are lands originating from 1893 overthrow of the
Hawaiian Kingdom, pending resolution of native Hawaiian claims
to those lands. Since 2003, he has represented the
Office of Hawaiian Affairs in litigation against the State of
Hawaii to obtain its right to ceded land revenues.
